This full-time position is primarily remote with preferred locations in New York City, San Francisco, or Washington D.C.

Role Overview

The Communications Officer will focus on media relations, managing how the organization’s work is portrayed to the public, policymakers, and partners. Responsibilities include acting as a spokesperson, developing story ideas, maintaining journalist relationships, managing press inquiries, preparing spokespeople for media engagements, monitoring media coverage, and supporting reputational risk assessments. The role reports to the Senior Communications Officer and offers opportunities for career progression into more strategic media ownership.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a spokesperson on and off the record, representing the organization accurately.
  • Pitch stories and secure high-quality media coverage across diverse topics.
  • Cultivate and update relationships and media contact databases.
  • Manage inbound media requests and coordinate timely, well-considered responses.
  • Prepare staff and grantees for media interviews including creating briefing materials and training.
  • Monitor and analyze media coverage, identifying potential risks and opportunities.
  • Contribute to reputational risk evaluations regarding external perceptions.
  • Collaborate on broader communications projects, such as newsletters and social media management.

Candidate Profile

  • 3–7 years of professional experience in media relations, public relations, press office, or journalism.
  • Proven experience as a spokesperson, comfortable speaking with media openly and confidentially.
  • Excellent news judgment and understanding of newsroom operations.
  • Ability to manage sensitive scenarios with sound and timely judgment.
  • Strong writing skills, capable of tailoring messages for various audiences.
  • Ability to develop strong collaborative relationships with journalists, researchers, and internal teams.
  • Composure under pressure and capability to manage fast-paced deadlines.
  • Genuine interest in the organization’s areas of focus and willingness to quickly absorb knowledge.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base salary: $145,000, plus an unconditional 401(k) grant of $21,750 for U.S.-based hires, totaling $166,750.
  • Geographic salary adjustments apply for candidates working onsite in San Francisco, Washington D.C., or New York City offices as outlined.
