Job description
Overview
This role reports directly to the Solid Waste Supervisor and is accountable for managing the safe and efficient operation of a waste Collection Site. The attendant must ensure courteous and professional interactions with residents of Union County while overseeing all site activities.
Work Schedule
The position operates Monday, Tuesday, Friday or Wednesday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Sundays from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The role functions on an on-call basis within these hours and occasionally requires additional work hours or days, especially during emergency or disaster situations.
Key Responsibilities
- Confirm residency proof from individuals using the site to dispose of waste.
- Guide residents to appropriate disposal and recycling containers.
- Visually inspect every disposal load to ensure compliance with the one cubic yard daily allowance.
- Monitor waste and recycling containers to prevent overfilling and notify the supervisor when containers require emptying.
- Operate all on-site equipment safely and effectively.
- Maintain clean work and walking areas free from debris at all times.
- Complete and submit all necessary documentation to the supervisor.
- Answer phone inquiries and provide information or assistance as needed.
- Maintain a professional demeanor under all circumstances and report any conflicts or harassment to the supervisor immediately, including recording involved parties' tag numbers.
- Adhere strictly to guidelines outlined in the Collection Site Information Booklet and County Policy Manual.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to interpret documents such as driver's licenses, tax deeds, and vehicle registrations to verify residency.
- Strong reading and writing skills with the capability to make autonomous decisions.
- Capability to enforce site policies and deny access when necessary.
- Competence in assisting residents with waste disposal.
- Basic understanding of recycling principles.
- Maintain professional relationships with county residents and co-workers.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills with the ability to convey and receive instructions clearly and handle stressful interactions calmly.
- Flexibility to work under stress and manage encounters with distressed individuals.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Job involves occasional physical exertion including lifting up to 70 lbs and regularly moving weights between 10 to 50 lbs.
- Constant physical activity such as standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing is required.
- Exposure to varying environmental conditions: extreme heat, cold, humidity, rain, wind, noise, odors, dust, pollen, and possible toxic substances.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid Florida Driver's License is mandatory.
- High School Diploma or GED is preferred.
- Relevant combination of experience and/or training to provide necessary knowledge and skills.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening and Department of Corrections background check.
