The Brewing Operator role focuses on the safe operation and upkeep of brewing processes to ensure optimal effectiveness aligned with VPO standards, supporting quality control efforts alongside the Brewing Process Operator.

Core Responsibilities

  • Operate manual equipment within brewing areas following detailed work instructions and support plant control systems under supervision.
  • Continuously monitor process performance versus targets and log any brief stoppages.
  • Initiate corrective actions promptly when process outputs do not meet targets or when trends suggest emerging issues.
  • Document product movements and waste accurately, analyzing waste trends to identify problems.
  • Conduct prescribed quality control checks according to established work practices.
  • Quickly react to upstream or downstream signals that could negatively affect production quality or output.
  • Utilize appropriate problem-solving techniques as outlined in company procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organizational standards by applying 4S principles and adhering to safe work practices; identify and address unsafe conditions.
  • Collaborate and assist colleagues in completing their tasks effectively.
  • Perform in-depth cleaning, lubrication, and inspection of equipment per autonomous operations schedules and work instructions.
  • Carry out basic maintenance tasks such as valve replacements following maintenance plans, seeking assistance when necessary.
  • Report defective plant equipment to Process Artisan or Brewing Area Manager for resolution.
  • Record quality tests and analyses accurately in designated information systems; apply root cause analysis and quick fixes to resolve quality issues.
  • Engage actively in shift meetings, contributing to discussions, raising questions, and documenting issues and improvement opportunities.
  • Understand team objectives fully and participate in goal review sessions.
  • Use appropriate communication channels to stay informed and relay important information.
  • Conduct thorough shift handovers, ensuring smooth transition of relevant plant, quality, and maintenance information.
  • Apply the 5 Whys methodology and quick fix routines to troubleshoot issues and report findings appropriately.
  • Support problem-solving teams with necessary information.
  • Identify and report waste sources to Brewing Area Manager for continuous improvement.

  • Proficiency operating both manual and automatic brewing machinery according to SOPs.
  • Capability to monitor production processes and implement necessary response strategies.
  • Competence in executing autonomous tasks adequately.
  • Timely completion of shift documentation, including operator workstation and team room records.
  • Application of 5S standards and organization practices.
  • Managing quality at the source of production.
  • Effective use of administrative systems, procedures, and digital tools.
  • Contributing to personal and team skill development.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Food Science, or a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Food Science, Industrial Chemistry, or related fields.
  • IBD certification and completion of brewing learnership including Brewer's diary and certificate in brewing.
  • Minimum of one year work experience, preferably within the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector.
