Associate Graphic Designer

Job Overview

The Associate Graphic Designer will work under general supervision to translate verbal and written concepts into compelling visual designs. This includes creating various graphic materials such as digital advertisements, web banners, infographics, illustrations, posters, flyers, banners, and display content, often for use in publications. The role involves using computer design tools and applications to develop educational and promotional content.

Position Context

This is an entry-level professional position within the Graphic Designer series. Unlike the full Graphic Designer role, which operates independently on complex multimedia projects, the Associate Graphic Designer receives guidance regarding project planning, scheduling, themes, and design concepts, particularly on multi-page or multi-color productions. Graphic Designers may oversee lower-level designers, including Associates.

Key Responsibilities

• Conceptualize, design, and lay out various graphic assets such as reports, brochures, posters, charts, logos, promotional items, and educational materials, integrating personal interpretation, editing, and research.
• Create digital communications including social media graphics, infographics, online newsletters, and web banners.
• Recommend design approaches, including themes, styles, and formats for simple projects while receiving technical guidance on complex ones.
• Adhere to established County graphic design standards and policies.
• Capture and edit digital photographs and videos during events such as news conferences and community activities.
• Prepare printer specifications and coordinate with internal and external printing services.
• Possibly serve as a Disaster Service Worker when required.

Required Qualifications

• Education equivalent to an associate degree in graphic design, visual communications, photography, or related fields, or completion of 60 college semester units with relevant management or analytical experience substituting education on a year-for-year basis.
• Minimum of one year full-time experience in graphic art design, digital arts, or use of graphic design software for product or web application development.
• Possession of a valid California driver’s license and ability to travel to different locations as needed.
• Willingness to act as a Disaster Service Worker and fulfill related training and emergency service obligations.

Knowledge and Abilities

• Understanding of design principles and methods used for publication and multimedia presentations.
• Proficiency in multiple desktop publishing, graphic, and word processing software.
• Knowledge of photography, scanning, typography, art materials, and illustration equipment.
• Familiarity with printing and reproduction methods.
• Ability to interpret statistical data into charts and graphs.
• Mastery of English language usage including grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
• Awareness of inclusive design practices suitable for diverse audiences.
• Creative skills in producing drawings, illustrations, charts, and maps.
• Capacity to manage simple production projects and meet deadlines under pressure.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills across cultural backgrounds.
• Skill in establishing positive working relationships with colleagues, public, and other agencies.
