About the Role

The award-winning print features design team at The New York Times manages the majority of the newspaper's weekly sections including Arts & Leisure, Sunday Business, Styles, Book Review, and Food. We are seeking an accomplished Art Director to join this team at our New York City office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with editors and photo editors as a creative lead and project manager to design covers, interior pages, and special projects.
  • Develop innovative visual concepts and ensure their execution through to publication.
  • Effectively commission illustrations suitable for multiple platforms.
  • Demonstrate commitment to journalistic independence and the mission of delivering truthful, understandable news.
  • Report to the Design Director of Print Features.

Candidate Profile

  • Minimum of 5 years in design roles.
  • A strong portfolio showcasing exceptional typography and layout skills, gained through experience in magazines, innovative newspaper design, or book design.
  • Proficient with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Excellent communication abilities for pitching ideas and achieving consensus.
  • Proven collaborative skills to work effectively with designers, editors, and photo editors.
  • Experience managing projects and meeting tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated talent in illustration and enthusiasm for nurturing a diverse artist network.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Knowledge of digital art direction and awareness of mobile user experience when assigning visual elements.
  • Strong editorial judgment and acute attention to detail.

Work Environment

This role is primarily based in the New York City office requiring attendance up to four days per week, with some remote work flexibility as guided by departmental policies.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is approximately $124,980 to $141,000 USD. Additional compensation may include annual bonuses and restricted stock awards. Benefits typically involve medical, dental, vision coverage, Flexible Spending Accounts, a company-matched 401(k) plan, paid vacation, sick leave, parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and professional development opportunities.
