Role Overview
Armour Soldiers are integral members of the Combat Arms team, operating and maintaining armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) such as tanks and Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV 6). They manage weapon systems, conduct surveillance, handle communication devices, and execute direct fire against enemy targets. Core responsibilities include driving and upkeep of AFVs, firing and loading main and machine guns, operating surveillance tools, maintaining communications gear, and gathering intelligence on terrain and enemy movements.
Work Environment
Employment with the Regular Force involves relocation upon completion of training, with assignments to various bases, while the Primary Reserve offers part-time service within a specific reserve unit, generally without relocation. Reserve members typically serve evenings and weekends, with potential for full-time roles.
Entry Requirements and Training
No prior experience or career skills are necessary. Applicants must meet the provincial minimum education standard of Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec; foreign education credentials may be considered. Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, which emphasizes fitness and fundamental military skills.
Trade-specific training occurs at the Combat Training Centre in Gagetown, New Brunswick, lasting 12 weeks. This course covers physical fitness, reconnaissance patrolling, advanced weapons handling, field craft, operation and maintenance of tanks and LAVs, familiarization with Canadian and foreign equipment, tactical communication, armour organization and tactics, and the history of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps.
Advanced Training and Specializations
Armour Soldiers may pursue specialized roles through formal courses and hands-on experience, such as Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) Operator, Assault Troop, Direct Fire Gunnery Instructor, and Arctic Operations Advisor. Further career progression offers advanced courses including Army Direct Fire Specialist, Chemical Biological Radiation and Nuclear Defence Advisor, Assault Troop Leader, UAS Detachment Commander, and Crew Commander.
Part-Time Service Option
The position is also available in the Primary Reserve, allowing individuals to serve part-time with their community military unit, balancing civilian employment or education. Training matches Regular Force standards and includes 12 weeks of trade-specific training at Regional Training Centers. Reserve members receive pay during training, benefits, and may participate in a pension plan.
