Overview
MatchBox Consulting Group is recruiting an experienced Aquatic Scientist for a prominent environmental consulting firm. This position is perfect for a seasoned professional passionate about leading field operations, collaborating on multidisciplinary environmental projects, and nurturing junior colleagues' growth.
Operating within a cooperative team of environmental experts, the role involves supporting fisheries and aquatic evaluations across Canada, guiding clients through regulatory frameworks, and advancing efforts to protect and improve aquatic habitats. The opportunity encompasses a well-balanced mix of field activities, technical documentation, and professional growth supported by a collaborative team setting.

Whitehorse, Yukon Territory (Hybrid work arrangement)
Responsibilities
- Oversee and assist fisheries and aquatic assessment initiatives and fieldwork throughout Canada.
- Plan and carry out aquatic field studies including sampling of fish, fish habitats, water quality, sediment, and benthic invertebrates.
- Perform evaluations of fish habitats, characterize fish communities, and assess fish health.
- Design and execute baseline environmental monitoring schemes.
- Analyze scientific data and compile detailed technical reports and regulatory submissions.
- Work collaboratively with diverse project teams, clients, Indigenous groups, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders.
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior aquatic scientists.
- Participate in preparing technical proposals, project scheduling, and scientific peer reviews.
- Represent the firm at technical presentations, industry events, and professional conferences.
- Travel to remote and northern field locations as necessary.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Biology, Aquatic Sciences, Fisheries, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.
- Certification as a Registered Professional Biologist (R.P.Bio) or equivalent credential, or the qualifications to obtain it.
- At least six years' experience in fisheries and aquatic scientific work.
- Proficiency in fish collection methods, community assessments, and health evaluations.
- Comprehensive understanding of freshwater ecosystems, fish habitat assessments, and statistical data analysis.
- Experience in creating and managing baseline environmental monitoring programs.
- Strong skills in technical writing, data analysis, and report generation.
- Capability to plan and lead aquatic fieldwork efficiently.
- Excellent communication, organizational aptitude, and project management abilities.
- Willingness and ability to undertake travel to remote project sites and operate under diverse field conditions.
Preferred Attributes
- Background in supporting mining or natural resource related projects.
- Experience with Fisheries Act Authorization processes and fish habitat evaluations.
- Familiarity with water, sediment, and benthic invertebrate data collection and analysis.
- Knowledge of quality assurance/quality control protocols and environmental data management.
- Ability to operate boats and outboard motors during fieldwork.
- Prior experience mentoring junior staff and collaborating in multidisciplinary consulting teams.
