Trainee Clinical Scientist – Radiotherapy Physics

Overview

The NHS Wales is offering a 36-month fixed-term salaried postgraduate training position in Radiotherapy Physics at Swansea Bay University Health Board. This role is designed for a highly motivated science graduate passionate about the scientific aspects of patient care. The trainee will follow structured competency-based training pathways (ACS or AHCS) to achieve Clinical Scientist registration through practical, work-based learning.

Key Responsibilities

The trainee will support various clinical and scientific activities within Radiotherapy Physics services, performing a broad set of specialist tasks independently after training. They will contribute to service quality enhancement and provide technical advice to other directorates interpreting results and evaluating therapeutic options. Assignments may include projects supervised by senior Clinical Scientists, research participation accounting for approximately 10% of work time, and preparing scientific reports. Mandatory departmental training must also be completed as required.

Candidate Profile

Applicants must hold a relevant first or upper second-class honours degree with knowledge of quality control and management assurance, and understanding of radiotherapy applications. Practical clinical experience equivalent to a postgraduate diploma is expected. A Master of Science in Medical Radiation Physics accredited by IPEM is desirable, along with research experience. Candidates should show commitment to clinical science, patient care, proficiency development in relevant techniques, research design capabilities, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under pressure with effective prioritization. High manual dexterity and willingness to travel are essential. Welsh language skills are advantageous but not mandatory.

Terms and Conditions

This fixed-term role is funded for 36 months at Band 6 on the Agenda for Change pay scale, with an annual salary ranging from £40,559 to £48,841. Full-time working is expected onsite at Singleton Hospital, Swansea. Applicants requiring skilled worker visa sponsorship are welcome and will be considered. The post requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check due to its clinical nature.
