About the team

The Student Experience team sits within the Academic Division and is made up of experienced professionals focused on creating an excellent experience for students and staff through dependable, high-quality service. Their main emphasis is supporting the student journey at the University of Otago, from initial admission through to graduation, by offering prompt, accurate information and practical guidance. The wider Academic Division also provides strategic oversight for teaching and learning policy and practice, academic staff confirmation and promotion, and other support functions for the student community.

The role

As a Student Adviser, you will work with colleagues to deliver high-quality advice to undergraduate students and help ensure they have a positive experience at the University of Otago. The role involves sharing programme and course information, supporting a diverse student cohort, and guiding students toward decisions that align with their academic and career goals.

What you will do

• Offer student-focused, holistic advice that helps learners progress toward their academic goals and wider aspirations.
• Provide accurate course guidance while ensuring all advice aligns with relevant regulations.
• Direct students to appropriate support services and opportunities, including the Career Development Centre, Disability Information and Support, International Student Support, Pacific Island Centre, and Te Huka Mātauraka.
• Collaborate with Student Experience colleagues, Academic Division teams, academic staff, and other university groups to provide timely, targeted support across campus.

Skills and experience

• Prior experience in an advisory capacity.
• Strong commitment to customer service and a genuine interest in supporting students well.
• Background in student administration or similar services within a tertiary education setting.
• Comfort working in a busy and complex environment.
• Good understanding of pastoral care and extracurricular support services available at Otago.
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer systems; experience with eVision is an advantage.

Additional information

The nature of the Academic Division means duties may span a broad range of tasks and may require work from different locations across campus. Terms and conditions

There are two fixed-term, full-time roles at 37.5 hours per week. These positions are based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin, and continue until 30 July 2027. The remuneration band is $69,931 to $74,609 per annum, with the top of the range at $80,285 per annum. Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
