The Process Engineer for Cell Assembly will serve as the technical expert for their assigned process, focusing on optimizing methods, improving cycle times, minimizing downtime, controlling costs, and elevating overall quality to ensure top process performance. This role is crucial as battery cells are fundamental components in Tesla vehicles and storage products. The position offers a challenging yet exhilarating environment requiring high motivation and collaboration with a capable team to turn ambitious goals into reality.
Primary Responsibilities
- Evaluate and enhance production workflows, ensuring safety and maximizing Overall Equipment Effectiveness with cost efficiency while striving for world-class quality standards.
- Lead initiatives for continuous improvement to boost yield, production capacity, and process capability.
- Leverage technical expertise to innovate and design processes, procedures, tooling, and assembly fixtures.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and validate manufacturing processes and improve product manufacturability.
- Support new product launches in coordination with design, quality, and new product introduction teams.
- Enable data-driven decision-making using predictive analysis tools and factory data system integration, including software such as MySQL, Python, JMP, Tableau, and Ignition.
- Utilize structured problem-solving methods and root cause analysis techniques like Design of Experiments (DoE), Five Why (5W), Eight Disciplines (8D), and Ishikawa diagrams.
- Apply Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) to monitor and control process variation.
- Maintain and update process documentation including Manufacturing Instructions, Standard Work documents, PFMEA, and Control Plans.
- Conduct regular audits to ensure manufacturing processes meet product specifications and standards.
- Design and modify production line layouts focusing on material flow, waste minimization, and ergonomics, using Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Develop skills of Process Technicians and assist with associate training as needed.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience demonstrating exceptional capability. Senior roles available for experienced candidates.
- Prior experience working in a battery cell manufacturing setting.
- Strong process engineering capabilities including process development, troubleshooting, data and constraint analysis, flow optimization, and root cause investigation.
- Effective teamwork skills across organizational levels, with a focus on partnering with direct labor to identify challenges and devise structured solutions.
- Proficiency in identifying critical process parameters and statistical methods applied to process control and measurement.
- Ability to provide clear technical guidance to engineering consultants and production teams.
- Competent in interpreting basic mechanical and electrical schematics.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Fluency in English or German.
