About the Role and Company
We are seeking a Non-Executive Director to join the board of a Singapore-based fintech startup. The company is in the process of securing a Major Payment Institution (MPI) Licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), presenting a distinctive chance to influence the organization from its founding through the licensing journey and beyond. The company is currently preparing its MAS application and undertaking regulatory engagement as it moves towards becoming a fully licensed payment institution.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver independent oversight and strategic advice to the Board.
- Support the licensing application and communication with MAS.
- Contribute to shaping business strategies and governance frameworks.
- Help build strategic partnerships and strengthen industry relationships.
- Supervise governance matters including anti-money laundering (AML), counter-financing of terrorism (CFT), risk management, and regulatory compliance.
- Participate actively in Board meetings and influence major corporate decisions.
Role Expectations and Time Commitment
Presently, as regulated payment activities have not started, Board involvement is light, around 5-10 hours per week, varying with business priorities and licensing progress. After licence acquisition, the role will evolve to support commercial expansion and operational growth.
Candidate Requirements
- Preferably Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Prior experience at the Board, Director level, or in senior management within a regulated financial institution.
- In-depth knowledge of Singapore's Payment Services Act and the MAS regulatory ecosystem.
- Background in payments, fintech, banking, financial services, or digital payment sectors.
- Expertise in corporate governance, AML/CFT protocols, and enterprise risk management.
- Capability to fulfill MAS Fit & Proper standards.
Compensation and Terms
This is an early-stage board role with a monthly retainer reflecting the company's initial phase before licensing and limited involvement. The remuneration package will be reassessed once the MPI Licence is granted and commercial activities begin.
