Mechanical Engineer - Debug Project

Overview

The Debug Project at Google is focused on pioneering new solutions to mitigate diseases spread by mosquitoes by developing technologies to raise and release sterile mosquitoes. This role places you within a compact, dynamic team including mosquito biologists, software developers, and automation specialists, dedicated to refining and advancing Debug’s novel products and technologies.

Primary Responsibilities

• Develop and assemble automated electromechanical systems incorporating servo mechanisms, pneumatics, sensors, and motor drives.
• Manage all stages of the product development cycle, from defining specifications and prototyping to the launch of fully operational production systems.
• Serve as the key engineering liaison, collaborating closely with scientific, software, and operational teams to address complex engineering challenges with innovative and practical solutions.
• Collaborate directly with end-users for iterative design improvements, conduct prototype testing, verify product compliance, and troubleshoot production equipment performance issues.
• Analyze existing machinery and workflows to enhance processes and develop strategic multi-year engineering roadmaps; employ engineering tools such as CAD, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Design for Assembly (DFA) to establish product functional requirements.

Required Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience.
• At least three years of expertise designing mechanical components including plastics, metals, assemblies, printed circuit boards, or flexible circuits.
• Minimum three years’ experience using CAD software like 3D MCAD, NX, Creo, or Solidworks for mechanical design.

Desired Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Prior experience creating industrial or laboratory automation systems and developing manual tools & processes with iterative user feedback.
• Proven experience collaborating with vendors and manufacturers on component fabrication and quality assurance.
• Familiarity with robotics, industrial pneumatics and sensors, biotechnology apparatus, and relevant regulatory standards.
• Strong communicator skilled at cross-disciplinary teamwork.
