Role Overview
The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing, verifying, and validating prototype systems related to electrochemical applications such as fuel cells, electrolyzers, batteries, and reactors. Practically inclined candidates will support prototype testing in labs and pilot environments while selecting and verifying mechanical components and subsystems. This role demands creativity and hands-on experience in prototyping within industrial and product development settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design efforts at system, subsystem, and component levels, including sourcing and validating components, structural design, fluid management, and process systems.
- Develop engineering documentation, such as design requirements, specifications, and materials for design review and release.
- Create designs optimized for prototyping and high-volume manufacturing.
- Evaluate and test materials to ensure long-term durability.
- Produce detailed SolidWorks models and drawings adhering to ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Design and execute plans for functional, performance, and durability testing.
- Prepare comprehensive design documentation for internal teams and external clients.
- Conduct design analyses using 3D modeling and finite element analysis (FEA).
- Provide technical support for R&D prototype and pilot integrations.
- Oversee mechanical systems and components supplied by third parties.
- Organize and lead both informal and formal design reviews.
- Demonstrate effective project management and collaborate within cross-disciplinary R&D groups.
- Ensure compliance with AGORA’s quality standards as well as federal and provincial regulations.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant technologies and engineering best practices.
Candidate Requirements
- Must be Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Engineering Physics or related discipline.
- Between 3 to 5 years of practical experience in fuel cells, electrolyzers, batteries, or reactor design.
- Proven experience in industrial and product development environments.
- Strong knowledge of structural design principles, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fabrication, assembly, and selection of mechanical elements.
- Track record of creative problem solving to meet functional and budgetary requirements.
- Hands-on experience with prototyping and testing methodologies.
- Proficiency with software including:
- CAD modeling: AutoCAD, Creo, SolidWorks, CATIA
- Processing tools: ANSA, META, LS-PrePost, HyperGraph, Primer
- Analysis software: ANSYS, LS-DYNA, COMSOL, Simulink, ABAQUS
- Programming and data tools: Python, Golden Surfer, MATLAB, C, Excel VBA
- Ability to effectively plan and schedule work to meet deadlines and deliverables.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical concepts clearly across various audiences.
- Experience operating prototyping equipment such as 3D printers, lathes, CNC machines, and mills is advantageous.
- Eligibility for or possession of P.Eng designation in British Columbia is preferred.
