Manual Lathe Machine Operator

About the Role

We are looking for a meticulous Manual Lathe Machine Operator responsible for creating precision parts through hands-on machine operation. The operator will read and understand engineering drawings, set up the lathe manually, control the cutting processes, and ensure quality without the aid of automated controls. This role demands strong mechanical insight, solid math skills, and independent work capability.

Primary Responsibilities

• Manually adjust and secure machine components such as cutting tools, chucks, collets, and fixtures.
• Interpret engineering blueprints and job requirements to understand dimensions and tolerance levels.
• Operate machine levers, handwheels, and dials to regulate cutting speed, feed rate, and depth.
• Perform manual machining tasks including turning, facing, boring, threading, taper turning, and knurling.
• Accurately inspect completed parts using instruments like micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and thread gauges to confirm specifications.
• Select and handle raw materials appropriately, safely securing heavy stock in the lathe.
• Maintain machinery by lubricating parts, cleaning metal debris, monitoring tool condition, and conducting basic upkeep.
• Follow safety protocols strictly by using appropriate personal protective equipment and keeping the work area clean and safe.

Necessary Qualifications

• Documented experience operating manual or conventional lathes and machining equipment.
• Expertise with precision measurement tools including micrometers, vernier calipers, and bore gauges.
• Good command of shop-related mathematics, especially geometry and trigonometry, for dimensional calculations.
• Physical capability to remain standing for extended intervals and lift metal materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Keen attention to detail to identify mechanical anomalies through auditory or visual cues during operations.
• Minimum education: high school diploma or equivalent; trade school certification or completion of a machinist apprenticeship is strongly preferred.
