Role Overview

We seek a dedicated Lead Machine Learning Engineer to spearhead the creation, upkeep, and integration of data-driven models for industrial robots focused on motion planning and optimization. This individual will lead a small team of 2-3 engineers and help determine the future technical direction. Reporting to the Senior Director of Robotics, the Lead ML Engineer will expand core technologies and lead technical strategy in robot controller modeling.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop machine learning algorithms to forecast dynamic robot motions.
• Lead and mentor 2-3 engineers, providing technical guidance.
• Establish technical vision and roadmap for data-driven robot dynamics modeling.
• Implement robust MLOps practices to maintain data pipelines and infrastructure supporting robot motion modeling.
• Integrate learned models with the Resolver optimization engine.
• Work closely with robotics and software teams to deliver production-quality solutions.
• Contribute to setting product and technical priorities within a dynamic tech startup environment.

Essential Qualifications

• Experience with multiple machine learning techniques tailored for robotic manipulators, including system identification, dynamic model estimation, trajectory generation, and learning from demonstration.
• Over 5 years of programming expertise in Python or C++.
• Strong software engineering practices such as version control and unit testing, particularly in Linux.
• Proven technical leadership demonstrated through ownership of architecture, project management, or mentoring.
• Graduate degree (MS or PhD) in Robotics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related fields.
• Fluent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
• Ability to work onsite about 50% of the time at either Boston, MA (requiring US work authorization) or Berlin, Germany office.
• Ability to thrive in international, collaborative teams and solve complex technical challenges independently.
• Strong motivation to work in a fast-paced startup environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with industrial robots and their simulation platforms.
• Knowledge of robot kinematics and dynamics.
• Strong scholarly publication record in machine learning and robotics conferences and journals like CoRL, RSS, ICRA, IROS, ICML, ICLR.
• Experience in deployment of machine learning models in production settings.
