About the Role

We are offering a permanent full-time position based in Hamilton, Waikato, at the Ministry of Education to support and enhance learning support practices regionally. As Lead Advisor, you will coach and provide guidance to staff and managers to ensure consistent, high-quality learning support practices. You will coordinate with various teams to provide ongoing professional development and supervision for learning support personnel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a highly knowledgeable resource on Te Tūāpapa o He Pikorua to staff.
  • Empower team members to utilize data effectively for decision-making to improve learner outcomes.
  • Analyze regional data and evidence to drive improvements against key performance indicators.
  • Lead the regional rollout of national learning support initiatives, processes, and systems.
  • Stay informed on policy changes impacting learning support practices and adapt guidance accordingly.

Candidate Requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in an applicable field.
  • Clean, full driving license.
  • At least five years of experience delivering specialist learning support services in education or a similar context.
  • Proven expertise supporting children and young people with learning support needs.
  • Demonstrated leadership in guiding practice changes both individually and system-wide.
  • Established credibility with colleagues and management through strong practice understanding.
  • Solid knowledge of New Zealand’s education system.
  • Commitment to upholding Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
  • Understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and its relevance to Māori development and partnership values within the Ministry’s work.

About the Team

The Waikato region team delivers leadership and integrated services aligned with national education priorities like achievement, attendance, and learning support. The Lead Advisor reports to the Manager of Practice and Performance, who oversees strategy, planning, and performance measurement. This role collaborates closely with education directors, iwi, hapū, and diverse community groups to support equity for Māori, Pacific peoples, disabled learners, and other disadvantaged groups.

Additional Information

Salary is in the range of $100,296 to $121,490 annually plus KiwiSaver, appointed based on skills and experience. Applications close midnight Sunday 30 August 2026. For enquiries, contact the Manager Practice and Performance.
