Role overview
This part-time kitchen role supports school meal service by preparing breakfast and/or lunch items, assisting at serving lines, and stepping into different kitchen functions as needed. The position may also include occasional catering work.

Key duties
- Help set up the daily serving line, ensure food is maintained at safe temperatures, and confirm that milk coolers are ready for service.
- Prepare menu items according to the planned menu and company recipes, including advance prep for the following day.
- Use kitchen equipment such as slicers, mixers, and grinders when properly certified.
- Keep preparation areas tidy, sanitary, and orderly.
- Wash kitchen and cafeteria spaces, including equipment and dishes.
- Maintain stock organization, follow FIFO rotation, and keep storage and cooler racks clean.
- Monitor cleaning chemicals, maintain dishwashing equipment, and put cleaned dishes away in service areas.
- Request food and supply needs through the Kitchen Manager.
- Bake breads, cakes, cookies, and similar menu-driven items and present them attractively.
- Use batch cooking methods to preserve quality and food presentation.
- Set up serving and bar lines, keep food at correct temperatures, and replenish items as needed.
- Serve portions using the correct utensils and serving sizes while maintaining a welcoming service approach.
- Keep condiments, napkins, silverware, dishes, and other service items stocked for customers.
Compliance and food safety
- Follow the menu plan and standardized recipes exactly when preparing meals.
- Convert recipes accurately to maintain consistent product quality.
- Identify reimbursable meals and follow meal-pattern rules under HHFKA and CACFP guidelines.
- Maintain accurate daily production records by grade group.
- Apply HACCP procedures and complete daily, weekly, and monthly food-safety logs, including temperature checks for hot and cold foods.
- Work in line with company safety procedures and use caution at all times.
- Report unsafe conditions to the appropriate supervisor and take part in the safety incentive program.
- Take part in the Daily Dish program.
- Attend required meetings and training sessions and complete annual continuing education hours required under HHFKA.
- Support the organization’s core values centered on serving students, schools, and communities, honesty, service-mindedness, and continuous improvement.
- Follow the company’s timekeeping policy carefully.
Administrative responsibilities
- Handle customer payments during service, make change, and operate a cash register or computer system when needed.
- Ensure that only reimbursable meals are processed through the POS system.
- Complete daily paperwork, tray counts, and meal reconciliation tasks.
- Record working hours correctly in ADP or submit an adjustment sheet for missing time.
- Give 24 hours’ notice to DNS if unable to cover a scheduled shift; in emergencies, notify DNS as soon as possible.
- Carry out other assigned duties as required.
Physical demands
The job regularly involves standing, walking, sitting, squatting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, crawling, pushing, pulling, grasping, feeling, tasting, smelling, speaking, hearing, and reaching with the hands and arms. It may require occasional force above 60 pounds and frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving of items up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements include close attention, depth perception, sharp focus, and color recognition.
Work environment
Work may take place both indoors and outdoors. The role often involves moving machinery, wet or humid conditions, and high heat. There may also be occasional exposure to harsh chemicals and cold conditions. Noise levels are usually high.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or GED is preferred. Candidates should also have up to one month of related experience, training, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
Skills and ability requirements
The role calls for the ability to read simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write basic correspondence; and communicate effectively with customers, clients, and coworkers in one-on-one or small group settings. It also requires basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, rates, ratios, percentages, and interpreting bar graphs. Strong common-sense judgment is needed to follow detailed instructions and handle routine problems in standardized situations.

Work may involve dishwashers, steamers/kettles, mixers, ovens, stoves, fryers, slicers, thermometers, gauges, knives, box cutters, meal-counting software, desktop computers, calculators, telephones, fax machines, scanners, copiers, and printers.
