About Nabu Casa
Nabu Casa is the company behind Home Assistant, a leading open-source smart home platform used in more than two million homes. It was created to keep the project financially sustainable, and in 2024 it joined with the Open Home Foundation to help safeguard and grow open-source initiatives. Privacy, choice, and long-term sustainability guide the way the company builds products and works with the community.
The company is profitable and operates without outside investors. Its revenue comes directly from people who subscribe to Home Assistant Cloud and buy Home Assistant hardware, so the focus stays on employees and users. Nabu Casa also contributes to other open-source efforts in hardware, standards, and voice technology.
The role
Nabu Casa is hiring a Senior Python Integration Engineer for Hardware to own the Python layer that connects its hardware products with the Home Assistant ecosystem. This is a cross-functional role at the intersection of hardware and software, responsible for the integrations and device-support code that make physical Nabu Casa devices work smoothly inside Home Assistant. You will partner closely with the Hardware team and the Embedded Linux Developer, and your work will directly shape what users experience when they plug in a device.
The role focuses mainly on the client-side integration and application layer rather than firmware, operating system, or low-level hardware development. You will collaborate with the Hardware team, the Embedded Linux OS team, the Open Home Foundation, and the wider Home Assistant and ESPHome communities to create reliable, user-friendly device experiences.
You should be comfortable working in large, evolving codebases with many moving parts, public contributions, and long-term maintenance responsibilities.
Core responsibilities
- Take ownership of integrations and software support for Nabu Casa products across Home Assistant, ESPHome, and related Open Home Foundation projects through the entire product lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain Python integrations, proxy libraries, and other software components that connect Nabu Casa products to Home Assistant and ESPHome, with an early emphasis on expanding these areas.
- Build Python code that communicates with device protocols and hardware peripherals, turning low-level device behavior into polished Home Assistant entities and user-facing experiences.
- Work side by side with the Embedded Linux OS Engineer and the Hardware team to understand device capabilities and convert them into well-structured software integrations.
- Contribute to Home Assistant core, ESPHome, and related projects when needed to support integrations, config flows, entity models, and platform features.
- Maintain code quality in your areas by writing Python that is well tested, easy to maintain, and clearly documented.
- Review community pull requests and issues tied to the integrations you own, giving constructive feedback that helps external contributions progress.
- Diagnose and fix integration and software issues such as protocol edge cases, compatibility gaps, regression bugs, and device communication failures.
- Keep unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop testing strong wherever applicable.
What you need to have
- Strong Python development experience, including async/await, testing tools, type hints, and scalable architecture patterns.
- Demonstrated experience contributing to large open-source projects, including public pull requests, code reviews, and async collaboration.
- Experience building integrations, APIs, automation systems, device communication layers, or software for connected devices.
- Comfort working across the software-hardware boundary and understanding device protocols and interaction concepts; deep hardware specialization is not required.
- Familiarity with local communication technologies such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, USB, UART, mDNS, SPI, I2C, MQTT, or similar.
- Ability to quickly learn unfamiliar systems, move through large codebases, and solve greenfield problems by figuring out how complex systems connect.
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills across integrations and distributed systems.
- Familiarity with Home Assistant, ESPHome, config flows, entity models, or related Open Home ecosystem projects is a strong advantage.
Ways of working
- High autonomy and ownership, with the ability to independently take integrations from concept through long-term maintenance.
- Comfort working across distributed teams, cultures, and time zones in a highly asynchronous environment.
- Openness to feedback and willingness to adapt based on review comments.
- Community-minded approach, with confidence contributing publicly and working with external contributors in open-source settings.
- Strong written communication and the ability to explain technical ideas clearly.
- Quality-focused, while still being pragmatic and delivery-oriented.
Nice-to-have experience
- Prior contributions to Home Assistant, ESPHome, or related Open Home Foundation projects.
- Experience building software for smart home, IoT, or connected hardware products.
- Familiarity with Raspberry Pi or the embedded Linux ecosystem.
- Experience supporting software at scale across distributed hardware environments.
- Experience in fully remote, async-first engineering teams.

This is a fully remote company using Remote to employ people from around the world. You will be a salaried employee in your country.
The position is full time at 40 hours per week. There is no fixed schedule, but the team aims for at least 3 hours of overlap during the workday for communication. You will report to the Engineering Manager.
Benefits

- Fourteen days of paid sick leave where local law treats sick leave as unpaid.
- Six weeks of paid parental leave and six weeks of unpaid parental leave, usable during the first year after birth.
- A hardware budget for your work equipment at onboarding, with the option to keep the equipment for personal use after three years.
