Job Overview

As a Handyman at Westin Hotels & Resorts in Cape Town, you will work under the direction of the Chief Engineer to uphold the aesthetic and functional integrity of the hotel's built environment. Your duties will cover maintenance tasks across guest rooms, public spaces, and back-of-house areas. This includes but is not limited to plumbing, electrical repairs, painting, carpentry, heating systems, and furniture upkeep to maintain the high standards of the Westin Cape Town.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum 4 to 5 years of experience in a related handyman or maintenance role.
• Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and after-hours as operationally required.
• Professional demeanor and appearance with adherence to uniform and hygiene standards.
• Proficiency in English for speaking, reading, and writing.
• Strong communication skills with an ability to operate independently and as part of a team.
• Customer service oriented with ability to tackle physically demanding tasks.
• Sharp attention to detail relating to assigned responsibilities.

Primary Duties

• Perform all daily departmental maintenance duties as scheduled.
• Operate and maintain HVAC, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems including the Building Management System (BMS) for utilities control.
• Ensure proper handling, storage, and use of tools, equipment, and spare parts.
• Participate in preventative maintenance programs to preserve hotel standards.
• Handle painting, drywall, carpentry repairs, landscaping maintenance, lighting and electrical fixture upkeep, minor plumbing troubleshooting, and general cleaning tasks.
• Use correct safety practices including PPE usage, lockout/tagout procedures, hazardous material handling, and compliance with fire and emergency protocols.
• Respond promptly to guest maintenance requests with professionalism and courtesy.
• Maintain cleanliness and order in engineering and maintenance areas and ensure proper inventory management of materials and tools.
• Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other hotel departments for coordinated maintenance operations.
• Use computer systems for logging maintenance activities, schedules, and inventory control.

Physical & Safety Requirements

• Capable of physically demanding tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds independently and heavier loads with assistance.
• Ability to climb ladders, bend, reach, and use fine motor skills for inspection and repairs.
