Role overview
MiTek UK is hiring a Graduate Software Engineer to join the Optics team. In this hands-on position, you will help build a product that improves insight, visibility, and value across MiTek’s software ecosystem. You will partner with experienced software engineers, product managers, and QA professionals to design, implement, test, review, deploy, support, and continuously enhance production software.
This opportunity is aimed at early-career engineers who want to put their academic learning into practice, keep developing their technical ability, and grow into confident software professionals with a strong focus on quality, maintainability, and business impact.
Career progression
This role is designed as a long-term entry point into software engineering at MiTek, with increasing responsibility as your confidence and technical judgement develop.
- During the first 3 months, you will focus on onboarding, learning the product, setting up your development environment, understanding team practices, and completing supported engineering work.
- Between months 3 and 6, you are expected to own small product changes, write and update tests, take part in code reviews, and contribute to sprint delivery.
- From months 6 to 12, you should be ready to deliver larger features or technical enhancements, investigate bugs, make production-ready fixes, and engage in technical discussions.
- After 12 months, the path leads toward a more established Software Engineer position, with broader feature ownership, quality improvements across systems, and future senior-level responsibilities.
Growth is supported through one-to-ones, feedback from code reviews, mentoring, performance goals, and real product work.
Key responsibilities
- Build, test, maintain, and improve production features and supporting engineering capabilities for the product.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, QA specialists, and other stakeholders to understand needs, define technical approaches, and deliver effective software solutions.
- Take part in Agile ceremonies, contribute to sprint planning, and handle clearly defined engineering tasks from implementation through review and release.
- Assist with debugging, troubleshooting, refactoring, and ongoing improvements to live software.
- Contribute to automated testing, code reviews, documentation, telemetry, DevOps-related activities, and team knowledge sharing.
What we are looking for
- A recent graduate or a student due to graduate soon in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a similar technical field.
- Exposure to programming languages such as C#, .NET, TypeScript, JavaScript, Java, or Python.
- Basic understanding of software development principles, version control, testing, and collaborative engineering workflows.
- Interest in software architecture, product development, telemetry, user feedback, and how well-designed software supports business goals.
- Strong problem-solving ability, good attention to detail, and openness to learning from feedback.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
Desirable skills and experience
- Familiarity with cloud platforms, especially Microsoft Azure.
- Exposure to web application development, APIs, telemetry, analytics, or DevOps practices.
- Experience with Agile delivery, automated testing, or CI/CD pipelines.
- Interest in construction technology, engineering software, or product-led software development.
Benefits
- Permanent full-time employment with a competitive salary and benefits package.
- Guidance from experienced software engineers and support from a dedicated manager.
- Access to training, professional development resources, code review feedback, technical mentoring, and hands-on experience with production systems.
- The chance to contribute to a strategic product and build a lasting software engineering career at MiTek.
MiTek perks
- Generous leave, including Paid Time Off, 13 annual holidays, and volunteer time off.
- Day one Medical/Rx, Dental, and Vision plans.
- Family-supportive benefits such as paid caregiver leave, paid parental leave, and adoption reimbursement.
- Performance and incentive bonuses.
- Career growth support, training opportunities, Employee Resource Groups, and tuition reimbursement.
- Retirement support including matching 401(k) contributions and profit sharing.
- Employer-paid short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance.
- myFlexPay partner access, allowing you to track, manage, and access pay at any time.
