Overview
This role at Forestry England's depot in Falstone involves supporting the beat forester with a variety of forest management tasks. You'll be involved in practical forestry operations, inspections, and maintaining health and safety standards, embodying the value of "look out and look after."
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform restocking and establishment activities such as hand planting, building tree guards, fence repairs, and controlling vegetation growth.
- Manage tree clearance and maintenance including high pruning, cutting, and felling to sustain access routes or facilitate harvesting.
- Conduct tree safety assessments, progressing from surveys to executing chainsaw remedial work.
- Carry out surveying tasks involving measurements, tariffing, tree safety evaluations, and stocking density assessments.
- Collect and maintain precise operational data and records as required.
- Support program delivery by transporting materials and consumables across the Kielder Forest region.
- Assist in managing the coldstore facility by handling deliveries, checking tree sapling quality, and distributing saplings to sites.
- Operate and maintain tools and equipment to required standards to ensure safety on site.
- Coordinate with colleagues and stakeholders to effectively plan and execute work programs aligned with Forestry England's objectives.
- Uphold professionalism representing Forestry England and conduct risk assessments following FISA guidelines to maintain high health and safety standards.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties assigned by your line manager.
Person Specification
- Proven practical experience in forestry, countryside, or environmental management.
- Basic understanding of forestry, arboriculture, nature conservation, outdoor recreation, and countryside-related issues.
- Proficiency in handling various hand tools.
- Familiarity with health and safety systems relevant to practical countryside work, including risk assessments, Forest Industry Safety Accord (FISA), and lone working protocols.
- Competent IT skills, particularly with the Microsoft Office suite.
- Strong interpersonal and communication capabilities, able to work independently and collaboratively.
Qualifications
- Required: NPTC or Lantra qualifications in practical forestry skills (e.g., chainsaw operation, herbicide application, ATV use, strimmer operation).
- Possession of a full UK driving licence, although alternative proposals to perform the role without this will be considered.
- Desirable qualifications include forestry/land management certificates, additional NPTC/Lantra skills certifications, emergency first aid at work including forestry (F), GCSEs in Maths and English or equivalents, and experience with Forester Web software.

Salary is £26,959 annually, with a further £7,810 contribution towards the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme providing comprehensive benefits.
