About the Role

The Exhibits Specialist leads the coordination of both permanent and temporary exhibitions at the National Zoo. This role involves gathering detailed content information and acting as a central liaison connecting subject matter experts, curators, and various departments across the institution.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the collection and upkeep of exhibit-related information, collaborating closely with content experts in multiple departments.
• Conduct research on exhibit content and work in partnership with animal care staff to understand species-specific needs relevant to the exhibitions.
• Manage various materials required for content development including audiovisual media, interactive features, scale models, murals, and illustrations.
• Keep track of project timelines, coordinating exhibit planning, and budget management to ensure efficient execution.

Basic Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must meet the qualification criteria by the application deadline. Suitable background includes unpaid or paid experience within relevant fields such as design, model-making, art, taxidermy, or restoration. Educational qualifications demonstrating study in disciplines like illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or related areas are also acceptable. Progression through graduate-level education or equivalent advanced training in vocational or art schools is considered creditable experience on a month-for-month basis.

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 federal level involving exhibit development tasks such as theme research, layout design, material selection, and familiarity with exhibit presentation and program development. Proficiency in utilizing design software for exhibit creation and installation is essential.

Alternatively, candidates may hold a master’s or equivalent graduate degree, or have completed two full years of advanced education in related fields to qualify. Education and experience can be combined to meet the criteria.

Additional Information

This position falls under a bargaining unit. Recruitment incentives may be offered but are subject to availability and require a commitment period within the federal government if authorized.
