Job description
Role Overview
We are hiring a practical and confident Handyperson / Maintenance Operative to join the Facilities Maintenance Team at HMP Exeter, a Category B local prison for adult males. This permanent, full-time position entails working 39 hours per week onsite at 30 New North Road, Exeter EX4 4EX.
Become part of a dedicated group that operates Monday through Friday, functioning more like a supportive family than just colleagues. Together, the team ensures a safe and efficient environment within this self-contained prison city.
Responsibilities
As an Escort / Fabric Operative, you will collaborate with experienced tradespeople including plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, cleaners, and administrators. Your work will have a direct impact on the security and operational continuity benefiting prisoners, staff, visitors, and the broader community.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience working in or familiar with prison environments is preferred
- Proficiency in handling hand and power tools
- Background in building fabric or Hard Facilities Management operations
- Current First Aid at Work certification
- Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths
- Strong knowledge of Health & Safety regulations
- Excellent organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills
Compensation and Benefits
The salary for this role is £27,505.80 annually. Employees are entitled to 25 days holiday plus Bank Holidays annually. Additional non-contractual benefits include:
