Role overview
This Compositor position contributes to animated feature films by translating the Director’s and Production Designer’s creative intent into polished final images. The role combines lighting render layers and other CG elements to deliver striking shots, with a strong focus on complex compositing work, visual consistency, and collaboration across departments.
Key responsibilities
- Partner with Lighting and the Production Designer to build and refine key looks while preserving continuity across sequences.
- Work with the Compositing Supervisor to bring shot-level creative direction to life.
- Independently create scalable look setups that can be reused across multiple shots.
- Handle tasks efficiently, maintain strong output levels, and meet productivity and quota expectations with a sharp artistic eye for colour.
- Create and improve tools, pipelines, and techniques that make compositing faster and more effective.
- Collaborate well with teammates, respond constructively to direction, and stay effective under pressure and tight deadlines while resolving technical issues.
- Guide and support junior and mid-level compositors by sharing knowledge and offering practical solutions to visual challenges.
- Communicate clearly, professionally, and discreetly while respecting colleagues and confidentiality requirements.
- Keep building expertise in filmmaking, animation, and digital production workflows.
Required experience and skills
- More than 5 years of compositing experience in animated or live-action VFX feature films, or in high-end episodic series.
- Strong experience developing looks for shots, sequences, shows, and FX work.
- Hands-on production knowledge of Nuke.
- Solid understanding of CG components such as AOVs, render layers, and related elements.
- Strong grasp of colour theory and how to apply it for visually compelling results.
- Ability to design, debug, and improve complex tools and workflows.
- Excellent problem-solving ability with a balance of speed and long-term quality.
- Careful attention to detail and strong visual judgment.
- Good communication skills, plus the ability to manage and prioritize work across several areas.
- Willingness to mentor others.
- Ability to understand creative and technical needs and translate them into workable methods.
- Working knowledge of lighting and the ability to apply notes and briefs accurately.
- Comfort working with different colour spaces to maintain accurate colour across platforms and viewing environments.
- Python and scripting knowledge for workflow improvement is an added advantage.
Work location and arrangement
This role is based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and follows a hybrid format with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office.
