Job description
Role Overview
The Collections Clerk will support all aspects related to billing and handling third-party payments. This role demands clear and professional daily communication both verbally and in writing, along with a proactive approach to recognizing patterns in collections and addressing them promptly.
Primary Responsibilities
- Identify accounts with outstanding payments, including aging timelines and payment sources, and execute collection activities such as contacting patients by phone and submitting claims to corresponding payers.
- Assess patients' financial conditions and set up payment plans through contracts.
- Stay updated on relevant Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party payer rules and regulations; communicate updates to management and staff and maintain current, accessible documentation.
- Achieve goals by effectively reducing the days accounts remain in accounts receivable.
- Handle overflow patient inquiries received by Customer Service via phone.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Preferred minimum of 2 years experience in medical collections.
- Required experience using medical billing software for practice management.
Skills and Qualifications
- Strong oral and written communication capabilities.
- Proficient with computer systems including Windows and Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledgeable in CPT and ICD-10 coding plus electronic billing processes.
- Effective communicator with management, clinicians, patients, families, and associated staff.
- Fluent in English reading, writing, and speaking.
- Able to successfully manage frequent interruptions and reprioritize tasks accordingly.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and high attention to detail.
