Job description
Role Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Biomedical Scientist to join our Virology team at the Blackpool Teaching Hospital, part of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This Band 5 HCPC-registered or eligible scientist role requires enthusiasm for virology and laboratory diagnostics to support patient care across Blackpool and the Fylde coast.
Key Responsibilities
The position involves diagnosing infectious diseases by detecting pathogens via PCR and serological analysis. The scientist will handle diverse patient samples including blood, urine, feces, and swabs from hospital and community sources. Regular tasks include maintaining and troubleshooting automated laboratory systems such as Alinity, Ingenius, Vidas, and Cobas 4800.
Team and Environment
Our laboratory is a busy, well-equipped facility accredited with UKAS (ISO15189) and approved for training by IBMS. As a valued team member, you will contribute to providing timely and accurate results that guide clinical decision-making and treatment.
Candidate Requirements
Applicants should possess an accredited biomedical science degree and either hold HCPC registration or be progressing towards portfolio completion. NHS laboratory work experience is beneficial but not essential. Candidates must demonstrate strong computer literacy, excellent interpersonal skills, and alignment with Trust values, exhibiting motivation and professionalism.
Work Schedule and Conditions
The full-time working hours are 37.5 hours per week between 8 am and 6 pm, including weekends and bank holidays. Upon orientation, participation in a weekend rota with potential lone working is expected.
