Role overview
The Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand is hiring permanent full-time Aviation Security Officers at Wellington Airport. This frontline position supports the safety and security of travellers, airport operations, and restricted areas while contributing to the future of aviation in New Zealand. The salary is $72,187 per year.
What you will do
In this role, no two shifts are the same. You will help maintain a secure airport environment and keep passenger movement running smoothly.
- Check passengers and baggage using specialised screening equipment.
- Conduct mobile, walking, and fixed patrols across the airport.
- Control entry into secure zones and verify identity cards.
- Detect, prevent, and respond to possible aviation security breaches.

Training and development
You will receive fully paid training that combines classroom instruction with practical, on-the-job experience. On completion, you will gain a nationally recognised NZQA Level 4 qualification in aviation security. If you are successful, you must be available for the full training period from 05 October 2026 to 06 December 2026. Christmas leave cannot be accommodated for this role because this is the busiest period of the year.
About you
The ideal candidate is a team-oriented person who performs well in busy, changing environments and is comfortable working with people from many different backgrounds. You should be steady under pressure, adaptable, and professional in difficult situations.

Eligibility and working conditions
- You must be a New Zealand or Australian citizen, or hold New Zealand residency.
- You need to be comfortable working in a busy, noisy, and distracting environment while maintaining focus.
- You must be ready for a roster with 30-minute duty rotations, where duties may change at short notice depending on operational needs.
- You must be able to work a 6 days on, 3 days off roster, including day, night, weekend, and public holiday shifts.
- You must be medically fit and willing to complete a medical assessment.
- You must be available for an in-person assessment centre and interview in late July if shortlisted.
- Applicants will be required to complete pre-employment questions as part of the safety screening process.
- Some medical conditions may not be compatible with the role; applicants should disclose anything that could affect their ability to perform the duties.
