Position Overview

The Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services (BIDS) is recruiting for the role of Assistant Public Defender (Public Defender I) to be part of the North Central Regional Public Defender Office based in Junction City, Kansas. This role is designed for entry-level and developing attorneys who will work under the guidance of experienced public defenders and report to the Chief Public Defender or designated Deputy Defender.

BIDS provides legal representation to adults accused of felonies who lack the financial means to hire private counsel. Key Responsibilities and Job Functions

  • Provide legal representation for indigent adults charged with felony offenses in local district courts.
  • Develop essential trial advocacy skills and competence in managing all casework aspects under supervision.
  • Prepare for and manage complex litigation processes, including effective case planning to avoid unnecessary delays.
  • Collaborate effectively with support personnel for comprehensive client-focused defense.
  • Respond to emergencies or crisis situations associated with criminal cases.
  • Maintain confidential information securely and exercise strong ethical judgment.
  • Travel occasionally to courts, jails, or other work sites as required.

Required Qualifications and Competencies

  • Graduate from an ABA-accredited law school and active, good-standing licensed attorney in Kansas at employment time; or eligible candidates planning to sit for the Kansas bar exam in 2026 are encouraged to apply.
  • For out-of-state licensed attorneys, willingness and ability to secure Kansas admission promptly after hire.
  • Valid driver's license needed for court and jail locations beyond walking distance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic tools such as case management systems, e-filing platforms, and computers.
  • Strong organizational abilities and effective time management to handle interruptions and multiple communications.
  • Commitment to continuous learning in criminal law and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain an ethical and client-centered approach while respecting confidentiality and professional integrity at all times.
  • Capacity to work productively within a team and treat all individuals respectfully.

Salary and Benefits

The starting salary is $65,000 per year.
