About the Role
Youth Mentors play a crucial role in positively impacting the lives of children aged 6 to 14 as they navigate growth and transitions toward adulthood. Under the Family Works program, mentors establish a one-on-one supportive and non-judgmental relationship with a young person that fosters their personal and social development. These connections usually begin during a transitional phase in the child's life and are maintained over a significant period.
Many successful individuals credit their mentors for guidance and support; an example is Stephen Adams who acknowledges his mentor Kenny McFadden for influencing his path from an early age. The Family Works program aims to encourage children to make positive decisions, build self-esteem, broaden their life views, and importantly, enjoy themselves.
Responsibilities
- Spend about one hour or more weekly with your assigned child, engaging in activities such as walking, biking, gardening, tutoring, sports practice, arts and crafts, cinema trips, local exploration, or baking.
- Maintain consistent involvement for a minimum commitment of one year to provide stability and reliability for the child.
- Participate in monthly supervision sessions conducted in person or by phone.
Requirements
- Strong personal interest in working with children aged 6 to 14.
- Ability to relate to and empathize with young people and their families.
- Respect and acceptance of diverse cultural backgrounds and lifestyles.
- Minimum age of 18 years to volunteer for this role.
- Possession of a driver's license is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Willingness and ability to undergo a Police background check.
Additional Information
- Full training and ongoing support will be provided to volunteers.
- Next training session dates are to be confirmed.
- The role is based in Blenheim, Marlborough, New Zealand, and requires on-site presence.
- Volunteers should commit to a minimum of one hour per week and continuous engagement for at least one year.
