Job description

Role Overview

This position entails law enforcement and security duties focused on safeguarding life and property within the Smithsonian Institution's jurisdiction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve diverse communities with professionalism and integrity.
  • Interpret and enforce laws, execute arrests, conduct traffic stops, and manage emergency and crowd control scenarios.
  • Provide courtroom testimony, prepare felony charging documents, conduct interviews and interrogations, initiate and oversee criminal investigations, and gather evidence from victims and witnesses.
  • Lead efforts in community policing to foster positive community relations.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
  • Potential completion of a probationary period.
  • Maintain a valid bank account for direct deposit or electronic fund transfer.
  • For males born after December 31, 1959, registration with Selective Service is required.
  • Within 30 days of job closing, meet qualification standards including a year time-in-grade for promotion candidates.
  • Possess valid motor vehicle operator's license from DC, Virginia, or adjacent states.
  • Pass pre-employment drug screening and medical exams, with routine medical evaluations as required.
  • Complete annual firearms and security weapon qualifications, including standard security force firearm, ASP baton, side arms, OC spray, and familiarity with authorized shoulder held weapons.
  • Successful completion of law enforcement/basic police training at an accredited academy equivalent to Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) standards; proof of such training must be attached with the application.
  • A minimum of one year specialized experience equivalent to NZ-06 federal level involving protection against hazards, maintaining order, and safeguarding lives of staff, animals, and visitors.
  • Possession of an active police commission or one that expired within the last five years is a quality ranking factor that may enhance application ranking.
  • A character investigation will be conducted to verify honesty, integrity, character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.
  • Applicants should have moderate to arduous physical fitness, good near and distant vision, color distinction, hearing ability, and emotional and mental stability.
  • No minimum educational requirements are specified for this role.
