Job description

Overview

Infantry Soldiers serve as the principal combat personnel in the Army, tasked with confronting and neutralizing adversaries. They form the core combat arms team alongside artillery and armoured units. Trained to operate globally and in diverse terrains such as Arctic tundra, mountains, jungles, or deserts, Infantry Soldiers perform in varied operational formats, including airmobile and amphibious missions.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Proficiently handle and maintain an array of weaponry, including rifles, hand grenades, light to heavy machine guns, and anti-tank armaments.
  • Utilize advanced equipment for communications, navigation, and night-vision surveillance during missions.
  • Conduct regular inspection and upkeep of weapons systems, vehicles, survival kits, and personal protective gear.
  • Engage in airborne operations as required.
  • Coordinate operations with supporting elements such as fighter aircraft and artillery units.
  • Execute unarmed combat techniques and employ camouflage, concealment, patrols, assaults, defensive maneuvers, and escape and evasion strategies.

Work Environment

Infantry Soldiers predominantly operate outdoors under conditions simulating actual field scenarios. Assignments may involve postings across Canada or deployments worldwide. Regular Force members experience relocations to assigned bases with limited flexibility, while Primary Reserve Force members serve part-time within a specific Reserve unit, typically one evening weekly plus weekends, with potential full-time engagement opportunities.

Entry Requirements and Training

  • No prior work experience or career-related skills are mandatory; recruitment personnel assist in assessing candidate suitability.
  • The minimum education criterion is completion of provincial grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec; international credentials might be accepted.
  • Initial training entails completing Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Quebec, focusing on physical fitness and core military competencies.
  • Further infantry training occurs at one of three Military Training Centres, lasting 17 weeks and covering weapon handling, fieldcraft, defensive construction, navigation, patrolling, and tactical operations.

Specialized and Advanced Training

Infantry Soldiers have opportunities to develop specialized expertise through formal courses and practical training including parachuting, mountain warfare, instructional techniques, close quarter combat, nuclear and chemical defence, among others. Career progression includes advanced leadership and tactical roles such as section commander, sniper, reconnaissance patroller, and tactical intelligence operator.

Part-Time Service Options

The Primary Reserve offers part-time roles allowing members to balance military service with civilian employment or education. Reservists train with their home units, are compensated for training, are not obligated to relocate, but may volunteer for deployments or moves. They receive paid positions at 92.8% of Regular Force pay along with benefits and pension eligibility.
