General Manager - New Build Projects

Role Overview

The General Manager for New Build Projects at IMI Shipyard in Ras Al Khair is tasked with the comprehensive leadership and management of all shipyard projects within Zone D2. Reporting directly to the VP of New Build Projects (Zone D2), this leader will tightly coordinate production efforts, streamline operations, uphold quality standards, and ensure project objectives are achieved efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

• Formulate and execute detailed project plans and schedules to meet delivery timelines and client requirements.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, procurement, and quality assurance teams for seamless production operations.
• Monitor project progression closely, identifying and resolving any blockages or delays promptly.
• Optimize allocation of manpower, equipment, and materials to enhance production efficiency.
• Partner with procurement to secure necessary materials and equipment availability.
• Regularly evaluate resource necessities and suggest enhancements.
• Enforce rigorous quality control processes ensuring all outputs meet specified standards and industry norms.
• Partner with quality assurance to maintain and update quality policies and procedures.
• Perform ongoing inspections and audits to ensure product quality, swiftly addressing any deviations.
• Lead and inspire teams across legal, commercial, business development, production, contract management, and vendor/subcontractor relations.
• Provide mentorship, training, and performance oversight to project and production personnel.
• Shape project strategies jointly with project and production teams and contribute actively in contract negotiations.
• Identify skill gaps, implementing training initiatives to enhance team capabilities.
• Ensure strict compliance with health and safety policies in production zones, conducting regular safety reviews and promoting a culture of safety awareness.
• Investigate workplace incidents thoroughly and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
• Drive continuous process improvements applying lean manufacturing principles to boost productivity and quality.
• Encourage a culture of innovation and creativity within the production teams, fostering ongoing improvement.
• Integrate best practices and cutting-edge technologies by collaborating with other departments.

Qualifications and Expertise

• A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or an equivalent discipline.
• Professional certifications in Project Management (e.g., PMP) are preferred.
• Marine industry related qualifications or substantial relevant experience.

Essential Competencies

• Extensive knowledge of shipyard projects and production workflows.
• Proficiency in engineering project management and oil fabrication/construction including welding and manufacturing techniques.
• Strong grounding in finance, contracts, legal aspects, quality control, health and safety, planning, procurement, estimating, and detailed engineering.
• Skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, stakeholder communication, commercial documentation, and presentation.
• Leadership prowess, team-building, problem-solving, and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to interact effectively at all organizational levels and respond thoughtfully without overreliance on authority.

Experience

• A minimum of 20 years' experience in offshore structural building encompassing jack-up rigs and tender barge new build projects; at least 5 years in senior management roles.
• A proven record of leadership and project management within recognized global shipyards, ideally in the offshore oil and gas sector.

Language Proficiency

• Fluent written and spoken English is essential.
• Arabic language skills are advantageous.

Working Relationships

• Key internal collaborators include Executive Management, C-Suite, General Managers, Project Client, and Functional Managers.
• External liaison with Shipyard Yard and Facility Management, Customs and Coast Guard, and External Supply Chain partners.
