Custodian

Role Overview

Working directly under the guidance of the Principal, Director of Facilities, and Business Manager, the Custodian is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, upkeep, and safety of school buildings and grounds. This role involves general maintenance duties, maintaining equipment functionality, and providing custodial support to students, staff, and visitors as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Secure and inspect the building at the start and end of each shift to ensure safety and cleanliness.
• Clean various areas including classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, adhering to school district cleanliness standards.
• Perform floor care activities such as sweeping, mopping, buffing, stripping, and waxing.
• Maintain cleanliness of rugs, carpets, upholstery, and blinds.
• Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills; remove graffiti and clean glass surfaces.
• Replace burnt-out light bulbs and set up or dismantle furniture and equipment in meeting and functional rooms.
• Clear snow and apply ice melting agents on entrances and walkways to ensure safety.
• Perform grounds-keeping tasks including debris removal and general maintenance of outdoor areas.
• Receive and assist with unloading deliveries and distributing supplies throughout the building.
• Empty waste containers, remove trash, and participate in recycling efforts.
• During school vacations, perform more extensive cleaning and repair tasks.
• Support school events by assisting visitors and parents as needed.
• Carry out additional supervisor-assigned duties as necessary.

Tools and Equipment

Utilize a range of hand and power tools including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, and power mowers as part of routine duties.

Safety and Compliance

• Adhere strictly to safety guidelines and regulations for the proper use of tools and equipment.
• Wear required personal protective equipment, including masks.
• Comply with the school district's chemical hygiene program and follow Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Work is primarily in school and office environments with outdoor tasks requiring operation in various weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and snow.
• Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents, trash, pollens, and allergens.
• Physical ability to work at heights using ladders or lifts and perform manual labor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Capability to follow both oral and written instructions from supervisors and coordinate work effectively with school officials.
• Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English to report issues and communicate as necessary.
• Demonstrated ability to foster cooperative relationships with students, staff, and visitors.
• Basic math skills to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division relevant to job duties.
• Ability to perform tasks according to established procedures and schedules set by supervisors.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent educational attainment sufficient to meet job requirements.
• Previous experience in building maintenance and custodial work is preferred.
• Valid state motor vehicle operator's license or reliable transportation.

Additional Information

• Occasional travel between school sites or to central office may be required.
• This is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
