Overview
As a Crossing Guard Rover, your role involves ensuring the safety of pedestrians, particularly school children, as they cross designated roadways. You will observe traffic to identify safe crossing gaps and control vehicular flow by indicating when it is safe to cross. This position requires flexibility to cover various crossing locations within the city upon short notice as assigned by the supervisor.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist pedestrians, especially children, to safely cross streets and intersections by stopping vehicles at designated crossings.
- Monitor traffic openings and escort children across roadways holding a visible "stop" sign to alert approaching traffic.
- Advise children on safe crossing behaviors and report any concerns or incidents to the supervisor promptly.
- Provide training to newly appointed Crossing Guards and retraining to current staff as necessary.
- Support shift operations by distributing equipment, delivering notices, conducting site inspections, and performing other related duties as assigned when unassigned to a crossing.
Education and Experience
- Minimum education equivalent to partial secondary school completion.
- At least one month of relevant experience, such as customer service or working/volunteering with others.
Additional Requirements
- Availability: Must be reachable by the supervisor to receive shift assignments every school day during 7:00am - 7:30am and 2:00pm - 2:30pm.
- Residency: Must live within a reasonable commuting distance to Kitchener and have access to a personal vehicle to reach various crossing points within 30 minutes of call.
- Preparedness: Arrive equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), location diagrams, and other necessary materials.
- Security: Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check at your own cost as a precondition of employment.
- Physical: Able to perform duties in all weather conditions year-round.
- Flexibility: Must be willing to cover any assigned shift and location across the city during school days in the morning and afternoon.
- Medical: Undergo and clear a medical examination to confirm fitness for duty.
- Transportation: Have reliable access to transportation capable of reaching various city locations promptly.
