Community Ranger – Marine Conservation (Fixed Term)

About the Position

This full-time fixed-term role until May 2027 is based in Auckland, with office options in Auckland CBD, Warkworth, or Fleet Street Devonport. You will play an essential role in the Auckland Marine District focusing on marine protection efforts including Marine Protected Areas and species within the Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana.

Core Responsibilities

• Engage with communities to promote marine conservation and advocate for protected marine species and areas.
• Support the seasonal advocacy ranger programs through public outreach and event planning.
• Design and implement a volunteer engagement program to empower local participation in marine advocacy.
• Monitor and advise on statutory aspects such as concessions and permit applications, coordinating closely with senior management.
• Coordinate resource distribution with partners and stakeholders to ensure timely availability in advocacy efforts.
• Occasional weekend and public holiday work with regular regional travel, requiring a full New Zealand driver’s license.

• Strong organizational abilities to manage multiple priorities efficiently.
• Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills to work collaboratively with diverse individuals and teams.
• Proficient written and verbal communication skills, including report writing experience.
• Outstanding time management skills, able to meet stringent deadlines without compromising accuracy.
• Knowledge of conservation legislation and management practices supporting sustainable futures for New Zealand.
• Well-developed cultural understanding, especially related to Te Ao Māori.
• Flexibility and adaptability to fulfill additional tasks as required by the Department of Conservation.
• Commitment to marine sustainability principles and Te Papa Atawhai’s guiding Kaupapa.
• Tertiary qualification in conservation or a related discipline.
• Multilingual communication skills are highly valued; fluency in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Te Reo Māori is desirable.
• Must hold a full New Zealand Driving Licence.

Compensation and Additional Information

The salary for this role ranges from NZD 65,590 to NZD 76,589 annually, based on skills and experience. Applicants are required to have valid work authorization covering the employment period.
