Backend Software Engineer

Role Overview

We seek a seasoned backend software engineer enthusiastic about working on complex systems. This position involves collaborating with a top-tier engineering team to maintain current systems while creating new solutions tailored to our unique challenges. You will have the chance to architect, develop, and manage the backend services and frameworks that power Asana's platform.

Work Environment

Based in our Reykjavik office, this job follows a primarily office-based hybrid schedule. Team members typically work onsite Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Working remotely on Wednesdays is usually permitted, with Friday remote work depending on specific job requirements and team coordination. Key Responsibilities

• Design and evolve frameworks that impact every facet of Asana's product.
• Collaborate with other framework and product teams to identify ways to accelerate development and help meet company objectives.
• Investigate and analyze complex systems to detect problems, underlying issues, and areas for enhancement.
• Promote high code quality and software engineering best practices via leading examples and framework design.
• Create new APIs balancing ease of use with the capability to support a feature-rich web application.
• Develop clear, maintainable code, consistently improving code bases.
• Engage with opportunities for professional growth and skill expansion.
• Work closely with an elite engineering team to build new features through reusable components.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three years experience in backend engineering within large, actively maintained codebases, producing and shipping production-ready software.
• Quick learner with adaptability to move fluidly across various areas of a complex codebase.
• Sound independent judgment in balancing rapid progress with quality, sustainable code production.
• Commitment to fostering and disseminating high-quality engineering practices.
• Familiarity with React and GraphQL ecosystems, with a preference for TypeScript knowledge.
• Desire to work in a supportive environment encouraging mutual growth among teammates.
• Curiosity about AI technologies and emerging tools, with an eagerness to integrate them to boost productivity, collaboration, or decision-making.

Compensation and Benefits

The monthly base pay for this role ranges approximately from 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 ISK, though the final salary depends on market standards and individual qualifications assessed during interviews. Beyond base salary, compensation may include equity, incentives, and other benefits.
