Role Overview
The position of Autistic Peer Support Worker involves leveraging personal experience with autism, mental health challenges, and service usage to motivate and instill hope for positive change in others.
Team and Service Context
This role operates within the newly established Community Autism Service, focused on assisting autistic adults in Southwark, Lambeth, and Lewisham who do not qualify for other support services such as mental health or learning disability programs. You will collaborate in a multidisciplinary team comprising occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, clinical psychologists, and administrators. The team functions within the broader neurodevelopmental pathway and promotes cooperation through regular meetings and joint efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide emotional support informed by lived experience with autism and mental health.
- Encourage social inclusion and connection among service users.
- Share effective coping strategies with those supported.
- Guide individuals in navigating mental health services successfully.
Qualifications and Professional Development
The successful candidate will have completed, or be prepared to complete soon after appointment, an accredited Peer Worker training program. Full support is offered through one-on-one supervision within the team’s management framework. Professional growth is facilitated via access to training, monthly peer mentoring, and weekly group supervision conducted online.
