Associate Director, Student Learning

Position Overview

This permanent full-time role at the University of Waikato's Hillcrest Campus is focused on leading and enhancing student learning, accessibility, and career services to support student participation, progress, and success throughout their academic journey.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Academic Services, the successful candidate will provide both strategic and operational leadership across the Student Learning portfolio. This includes overseeing managers and professional teams delivering inclusive, technology-driven student learning, career development, accessibility, and employability services aligned with University priorities. The role involves driving service improvements, fostering a student-centred culture, and helping shape the portfolio's future evolution to meet the changing needs and expectations of students.

Candidate Profile

The ideal applicant is an inclusive and consultative leader with extensive experience managing complex organizations. They possess strong pedagogical knowledge, a commitment to equity and accessibility, and demonstrated ability to lead service enhancements and organizational change. A relevant bachelor's degree plus substantial leadership experience or equivalent is required.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

• Deep understanding of pedagogical principles, student development, and inclusiveness in tertiary or comparable environments
• Leadership experience overseeing diverse teams in complex settings
• Expertise in strategic and operational leadership of student-facing or learning support services, including change management
• Proficient in people leadership, coaching, fostering positive and inclusive workplace culture
• Knowledge of service design, accessibility standards, student capability enhancement, and data-informed decision making
• Effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and ability to influence senior leadership and represent the University externally
• Committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and incorporation of mātauranga Māori in leadership and service delivery

A postgraduate qualification in education, management or leadership and experience within New Zealand tertiary education is advantageous.

Student Learning is embedded within the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) portfolio, focusing on delivering accessible, high-quality learning support and career services that underpin student success and smooth academic progression while promoting equitable and reasonable support measures.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range is NZD 144854 to 165777 annually, reflective of experience and qualifications. Benefits include additional university leave, competitive superannuation, flexible work arrangements, on-site parking, and discounted gym membership.
