About Halter

Halter is building technology that helps farmers and graziers operate more productively and sustainably. The platform removes many of the time-heavy constraints of traditional farming, helping customers manage livestock in a more efficient and modern way. The company is backed by major investors and is focused on creating meaningful, high-impact change in agriculture.

People join Halter because they want to tackle difficult problems, work with strong teammates, and contribute to a mission that matters. The culture emphasizes high standards, ownership, and a willingness to do hard work in pursuit of real-world impact.

About the Role

Halter is hiring its first VP Talent to lead the strategy and execution needed to scale the company’s hiring engine toward thousands of employees by 2028. This leader will oversee talent efforts across early careers, company-wide hiring, and executive search, while ensuring candidates receive an excellent experience no matter where they are located.

The role requires both strategic thinking and hands-on operational leadership. You will guide a large and growing multi-functional team, strengthen the systems and processes that support fast growth, and act as a trusted partner to the executive group on workforce planning and hiring decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Define and run Halter’s full talent strategy, covering proactive and reactive hiring across all levels, from early careers to executive search.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing recruiting organization, building a culture centered on accountability, coaching, and continuous improvement.
  • Help leaders within the function grow so the team can scale without relying on you as the single decision point.
  • Design talent processes that scale smoothly from sourcing and talent mapping through to offer acceptance, while keeping the candidate experience consistent and strong.
  • Improve both hiring speed and quality without treating them as trade-offs.
  • Build reporting systems that turn hiring data into actionable insight for the business.
  • Translate talent metrics into clear narratives that support workforce planning and sourcing decisions.
  • Work with other leaders to shape a scalable talent tech ecosystem.
  • Use AI to automate repetitive parts of recruiting so the team can spend more time on judgment, relationship-building, and high-value decisions.
  • Partner closely with executives and senior leaders to align hiring strategy with business goals and long-term planning.
  • Bring an independent, well-informed perspective that helps shape decisions rather than simply carrying them out.
  • Contribute as a key member of the People leadership team on broader company people strategy.

Candidate Profile

Halter is open to several backgrounds for this role, including experienced talent leaders and senior commercial leaders who have built and scaled high-performing teams. The company is looking for someone with strong people leadership, data fluency, commercial thinking, and a clear passion for talent as a growth lever.

Success in the role will require comfort with ambiguity, strong judgment, excellent executive communication, and the ability to lead through scale while preserving quality and candidate experience.

Requirements

  • Experience as a senior people or talent leader, such as a VP, Director, or CPO, with a track record of scaling recruiting during rapid growth.
  • Alternatively, a background in sales, marketing, or general management with strong team-building ability and a genuine interest in talent and hiring as a strategic function.
  • Proven experience leading managers and building organisations of 30 or more people.
  • Strong ability to work with data, create reporting, and evaluate information independently.
  • Experience designing high-volume, scalable processes while maintaining a strong experience for candidates or customers.
  • Interest in using AI and modern tools to improve how a function operates.
  • Excellent communication skills at the executive level, with the ability to simplify complex information into a compelling story.
  • Strong commercial judgment and business awareness.
  • Ability to work independently in ambiguous environments and know when to escalate versus decide.
  • Open-mindedness about background; Halter encourages candidates with the right capability and motivation to apply even if they do not match every listed criterion.

Benefits and Perks

  • Access to snacks and drinks at the office.
  • Health cover through Southern Cross Health Insurance.
  • Six months of fully paid parental leave for primary caregivers.
  • Four weeks of fully paid secondary caregiver leave, along with additional family-support benefits.
  • An annual NZD 1,000 self-development allowance.
  • Wellness leave and unlimited paid annual leave.
  • A remuneration package that includes salary, benefits, and employee stock ownership.

Work Style

Halter follows an office-first model. In-person collaboration is considered central to learning, growth, feedback, and strong working relationships. The company operates with a high-trust approach and expects people to work from the office by default while staying flexible when needed.

Application Details

Applicants are asked to submit a cover letter explaining why they are interested in the role and in working at Halter, along with a CV. Halter also encourages candidates who do not meet every requirement to still apply if they believe they are a strong fit.

Why People Enjoy Working Here

  • The work has genuine impact and contributes to better outcomes for farmers, their families, and the wider industry.
  • The company brings together driven, kind, and talented people who enjoy solving difficult problems.
  • There is strong room for learning, autonomy, and personal growth.
  • The role involves ambitious, fast-moving work in a company trying to reshape an entire industry.
