VMC Programmer

Role Overview

The VMC Programmer is tasked with developing, refining, and enhancing CNC programs specifically for Vertical Machining Centers used to produce high-precision components. This role demands thorough interpretation of engineering drawings and selecting the best tooling and machining protocols to ensure quality and efficiency throughout production.

Primary Duties

• Create and fine-tune CNC programs for VMC machines using CAM software or direct G-code programming.
• Analyze engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical details to determine machining requirements.
• Choose suitable cutting tools, fixtures, and machining techniques to optimize output.
• Plan machining operations, including sequence, speeds, feeds, and tool path strategies.
• Test, validate, and troubleshoot CNC programs prior to actual production runs.
• Maximize cycle efficiency while maintaining product standards and extending tool life.
• Assist with machine setup and conduct inspections on initial components.
• Work collaboratively with production, quality assurance, and engineering teams to resolve any machining challenges.
• Maintain detailed documentation and historical records of CNC programs and revisions.
• Adhere strictly to quality assurance policies, safety standards, and internal procedures.
• Propose and implement process improvements to boost productivity and cost-effectiveness.
• Guide and support machine operators in program execution and best machining practices.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or an allied technical discipline.
• Certification in CNC or VMC programming is advantageous.
• Solid familiarity with CNC programming languages, including G-code and M-code.
• Proficiency in CAM packages such as Mastercam, Siemens NX CAM, SolidCAM, PowerMill, or related tools.
• Competency in reading and implementing engineering drawings and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Good understanding of cutting tool selection, workholding methods, and machining operations.
• Experience with precision measurement instruments like vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and bore gauges.
• Strong troubleshooting aptitude coupled with problem-solving skills.
• Knowledgeable in machining diverse materials including steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and alloys.
• Effective communication and teamwork capabilities.
• Dedication to upholding quality standards, ensuring safety, and fostering continuous improvement.

Experience

Typically requires between two to five years in VMC or CNC programming and machining, aligned with organizational needs.
