Описание работы

About the Role

This permanent full-time position (minimum 32 hours per week) is based in the Takapō / Mackenzie District. The role is centered around providing remarkable customer experiences as a Tour Guide for the Dark Sky Project, an innovative world-class astronomy center located on the Takapō lakefront. The position uniquely blends guiding duties with driving responsibilities, offering visitors immersive night-sky experiences that highlight both the science of stars and Māori astronomy (Tātai Aroraki).

Our purpose is to foster deep connections — with our guests, our team, the place, and the Ngāi Tahu culture. Manaakitanga (hospitality) is integral to our values, ensuring all visitors and team members are treated as whānau (family).

Primary Responsibilities and Skills

  • Deliver engaging tours explaining astronomy concepts and Māori celestial knowledge.
  • Operate vehicles safely while performing routine inspections and maintaining driver logs.
  • Welcome and assist manuhiri (visitors) to ensure memorable experiences.
  • Work flexible shifts including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Demonstrate strong time management and uphold high health and safety standards.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of relevant experience in astronomy guiding, science communication, visitor interpretation, or tour guiding if the educational qualification is not held.
  • Alternatively, a New Zealand Certificate or Diploma (Level 4 or higher) in astronomy, science communication, visitor interpretation, or an equivalent overseas qualification.
  • Proficiency in public speaking and demonstrated customer-facing experience.
  • Current or obtainable New Zealand Driver's Licence, including Class 2 and P endorsement.
  • Possession or ability to acquire a First Aid Certificate.
  • Committed to health and safety and attention to detail in vehicle inspections and log maintenance.
  • Willingness to learn and correctly pronounce Māori language terms.
  • Additional language skills such as Japanese or Mandarin are advantageous for supporting international visitors.

Additional Information

  • Hourly pay ranges from $29.00 to $31.00.
  • Pre-employment checks required including drug and alcohol screening.
  • Competitive remuneration, excellent training, staff discounts across Ngāi Tahu Tourism, and a supportive workplace culture are provided.
