Software Engineer

Key Responsibilities

Software engineers at Opencast engage in maintaining and evolving team backlogs, actively participate in testing activities, and lead the implementation of user stories. The role promotes teamwork in a multi-disciplinary setting and contributing to internal communities of practice. Developers are expected to support and challenge colleagues constructively while guiding client projects from conception to deployment.

Technical Requirements

• Proficiency in Java or Scala is essential.
• Familiarity with other programming languages such as Kotlin, Ruby, or JavaScript is advantageous.
• Strong grasp of Object Oriented Programming principles.
• Deep understanding of software testing concepts and practices.
• Experience working with Government Digital Service (GDS) standards preferred.
• Comfortable adapting to new technologies with a willingness for continuous learning.
• Experience with agile development methodologies.

Additional Qualifications and Eligibility

Applicants must either have or be eligible for an active Security Check (SC) clearance, which generally requires UK citizenship and at least five years of continuous residence in the UK without prolonged absences. Experience delivering digital services to the UK government and familiarity with the GDS toolkit are highly beneficial.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range is £47,000 to £55,000 annually. Opencast offers a competitive benefits package including a 7% employer pension contribution, share options, discretionary bonuses, and 25 days of annual leave plus 3 additional days for urgent personal matters. Flexible working hours are provided, subject to client needs, alongside professional development, wellbeing support, and volunteering opportunities.

Work Location

This position requires regular on-site presence at the company headquarters, hub offices, client locations, and home. Access to transportation for commuting to various sites as part of daily work responsibilities is necessary.
