Job description
Overview
Reporting to Management and the Security Supervisor, this position ensures the safety and security of the College of New Caledonia campus along with all individuals present. The role involves monitoring for suspicious activity to deter vandalism, theft, and other criminal acts. Additionally, the Security Guard serves as the primary provider of first aid services on campus.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain safety and security by performing regular patrols inside and outside the campus premises to uphold security controls.
- Secure all entry points including doors, windows, and gates by locking them at designated times.
- Facilitate access to classrooms, doors, and gates as directed at specific times.
- Oversee security for parking areas, vehicles, and campus equipment.
- Attend to assigned campus locations in accordance with College directives.
- Assist staff, students, and visitors as needed, providing support and guidance.
- Engage with individuals of interest, directing those not seeking College services off campus while ensuring personal safety.
- Grant entry to secured areas where authorized.
- Monitor sensitive high-security zones such as computer centers, laboratories, media services, library, bookstore, and offices to prevent loss or damage.
- Render first aid promptly as required on campus.
- Keep first aid stations and dressing rooms orderly and sterile, ensuring supplies are maintained.
- Document all safety and security incidents, including equipment malfunctions and necessary repairs.
- Maintain accurate records, logbooks, booking information, and incident reports.
- Stay vigilant for vandalism and report findings accordingly.
- Ensure shutdown of unattended machinery.
- Supervise materials exiting the building to prevent unauthorized removal.
- Transport and securely handle cash if needed.
- Respond to all alarms including fire, trespass, motion, and technical alerts like Power Plant system alarms.
- Monitor building utilities attentively for leaks, heat loss, lighting issues, and clean safety hazards in the absence of custodial staff.
- Record contractor performance related to parking lot maintenance.
- Follow emergency callout procedures during incidents.
- Collaborate as part of a team to support the College's mission, vision, goals, and learner needs.
- Promote a respectful, professional work environment by effectively communicating with students and colleagues.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma with completion of advanced courses leading to a Basic Security Training Certificate.
- Possession of a valid British Columbia security license is mandatory.
- Minimum six months experience in commercial, institutional security, or related public relations roles.
- Valid Intermediate First Aid certificate (formerly OFA Level 2) required.
- Holder of a valid minimum class 7 novice (N) driver's license.
- Maintain a clean criminal record and disclose any infractions.
- Must be bondable.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills coupled with public relations capability.
- Proficiency with computers, including email and Microsoft Office applications.
- Physical fitness appropriate for job demands.
