Job Overview
The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) is looking for a Primary Care Assistant to join its Midwifery Department at the WRHA Community Health Services site located at 755 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba. This full-time, on-site position reports to the Primary Care Manager and is integral to the Primary Health Care Team, supporting client clinical visits and serving as a primary liaison between clients, team members, and other healthcare professionals. The role demands empathy, compassion, and a dedication to high-quality primary care services.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage client appointments, schedules, and records efficiently.
- Serve as the client's main point of contact within the healthcare team, ensuring a responsive and caring customer service experience.
- Support patient flow using advanced access principles within an inter-professional clinical environment.
- Maintain site organization and environmental controls to support clinic operations.
- Collaborate and share workload within the team to promote a respectful, safe, and culturally appropriate workplace.
Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum of two years’ experience in a healthcare-related role.
- Proficient with email and computerized calendar management.
- Preferred knowledge of electronic medical records systems.
- Experience in maintaining medical records, filing systems, compiling statistics, and handling personal health information with confidentiality.
- Receptionist or switchboard experience is desirable.
Education and Certification
- Completion of Manitoba high school education or equivalent is required.
- Successful completion of a Unit Clerk Course and/or Medical Office Assistant Course is mandatory.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification as per employer policy is required.
- A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Attributes
- Keyboarding speed of 40 words per minute.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Preferred knowledge of cultural safety, Mental Health First Aid, and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with excellent command of English, both written and oral.
- Value and respect for diversity and ability to embrace different perspectives.
- Critical thinking skills to foster positive client outcomes and adaptability to new practices.
- Knowledge of service excellence, customer service principles, and ability to handle confidential information securely.
- Capable of independently managing a demanding workload and taking initiative.
Physical and Additional Requirements
- Able to perform moderately strenuous physical activity including lifting and walking.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic environment with frequent interruptions.
- Successful candidates must provide a current, satisfactory Criminal Records Check including Vulnerable Sector Search, Child Abuse Registry Check, and Adult Abuse Registry Check, obtained within six months prior to employment.
- Employment limits include holding only one full-time equivalent (FTE) position across the WRHA legal entities.
- Candidates may be asked to complete a skills assessment as part of the interview process.

Work Schedule and Compensation
- Position anticipates a daily shift of 7.75 hours with annual base hours amounting to 2015 hours.
- Salary steps range from $23.22 to $26.30 per hour.
