Network Operations Engineer

About the Role

Google operates a vast network serving millions of users worldwide, and the Network Engineering team plays a crucial role in maintaining its reliability and scalability. As a Network Operations Engineer, you will be instrumental in enhancing the network's design and features to ensure smooth operation. Your responsibilities will include monitoring network performance, coordinating maintenance activities, adjusting hardware as needed, and addressing connectivity issues. This position demands innovative problem-solving using advanced and evolving technologies to guarantee continuous, reliable connectivity for users accessing Google's products and services.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as an expert across multiple networking domains including routing, switching, wireless, firewalls, SD-WAN, and network automation.
• Handle network escalations providing technical leadership during critical incidents, collaborating closely with the Network Operations Center.
• Drive initiatives to meet and surpass Service Level Objectives, targeting 99.95% global network availability.
• Manage operational elements of new product launches such as NextGEN WAN and Office, involving testing, defining operational parameters, developing support methods, and producing documentation.
• Write scripts and develop tools using Python or Go to automate tasks related to network diagnostics, configuration, and monitoring.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical discipline or equivalent hands-on experience.
• At least three years' experience with MPLS VPN, firewalls, data center networking, and Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN).
• Proficiency with core network protocols and technologies like TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, ISIS, and LAN switching.
• Programming skills in Python or Go for creating automation tools for network management and monitoring.

Preferred Qualifications

• Possession of professional or expert certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, JNCIE, or Google's Professional Cloud Network Engineer certification.
• Knowledge of data center architecture, wide area network designs, and wireless communications.
• Strong foundation in Linux/Unix systems including system monitoring and shell scripting.
• Capability to troubleshoot networks effectively and participate in global on-call rotations to maintain service targets.
• Experience managing moderately complex projects, documenting technical processes, and mentoring junior colleagues.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation is based on relevant skills, experience, and educational background. The salary range for this position in Ireland is €100,000 to €103,000 per annum, supplemented by a 15% target bonus, equity options, and additional benefits.
