About the Role

Join Tesla's Battery Cell Formation team as a Mechanical Design Engineer, where you'll focus on the mechanical aspects of battery formation and testing machinery. The position involves collaborating closely with manufacturing, equipment, and controls engineers in a fast-moving, challenging environment aligned with Tesla’s mission.

Responsibilities

  • Design and model mechanical parts and assemblies including plastics, sheet metal, fasteners, and other related components.
  • Choose and integrate off-the-shelf components such as motors, bearings, gears, sensors, pneumatics, cables, fasteners, and thermal hardware.
  • Conduct mechanical design analyses covering areas like thermal effects, tolerances, structural integrity, vibrations, kinematics, and fluid dynamics.
  • Address electronics packaging challenges involving thermal management, fastening methods, connector application, busbar design, and cable routing.
  • Develop comprehensive engineering test plans for product designs.
  • Create detailed drawings and manufacturing documentation for parts and assemblies.
  • Support prototype build efforts and component fabrication.
  • Work cross-functionally with mechanical, systems, electrical, digital control, manufacturing, industrial design, and test engineering teams to move designs from concept through to mass production.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years’ experience as a Mechanical Engineer.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks CAD and Product Data Management (PDM) software.
  • Strong background in machine design and applying drafting standards with expertise in GD&T (e.g., ASME Y14.5).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Solid foundation in engineering principles applied to equipment design and high-volume manufacturing process development.
  • Experience in failure mode analysis and robust problem-solving skills.
  • Competence in mechanics, kinematics, structure design, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics.
  • Involvement in student engineering competitions or organizations like BAJA or Formula SAE is advantageous.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $87,020 to $156,180 annually plus cash and stock awards.
  • Medical plans with options including zero payroll deduction.
  • Fertility, adoption, surrogacy, and family-building support.
  • Dental and vision plans with some zero contribution options.
  • Health Savings Account contributions alongside high-deductible medical plans.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts for healthcare and dependent care.
  • 401(k) with employer matching and Employee Stock Purchase Plans.
  • Company-paid life and disability insurance.
  • Employee Assistance Program and various voluntary benefits like critical illness and accident insurance.
  • Paid sick leave, vacation time, holidays, and flexible scheduling.
  • Backup childcare and parenting support resources.
  • Wellness programs including weight loss and tobacco cessation.
  • Commuter benefits and employee discounts.
