Irrigation Maintenance 1

Position Overview

School District No. 73 (Kamloops-Thompson) is looking to hire an Irrigation Maintenance 1 employee for a full-time, permanent role based in Kamloops, British Columbia. The job runs for 10 months each year, with the layoff period typically falling in November and December. After the probationary period is successfully completed, the employee becomes eligible for Extended Health and Dental coverage along with Group Life Insurance. The district participates in the Municipal Pension Plan.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Grounds and working with limited supervision, the successful candidate will handle a range of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the installation, repair, and upkeep of irrigation systems across the school district. The work changes from task to task and requires personal initiative and sound independent judgement.

Key Duties

• Support the layout and installation of new irrigation systems.
• Carry out warranty-related repairs for irrigation suppliers, including work on valves, heads, and automatic clock systems.
• Service existing irrigation systems by removing debris from heads and replacing heads when needed, using hand tools.
• Winterize irrigation lines in the fall and bring systems back online in the spring.
• Complete irrigation-related duties as assigned by senior Irrigation Maintenance staff.
• Take on other job-related tasks as required.
• Perform physically demanding labour on a regular basis.
• May also be assigned Equipment Operator duties.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

• Strong ability to communicate and build effective working relationships with the public, students, teachers, administrative officers, and other district employees.
• Comfort working on a range of tasks with limited supervision.
• Capability to repair and maintain irrigation systems according to dealer specifications.
• Ability to work on your own with minimal direction.
• Practical knowledge of different irrigation heads, timers, and system types.
• Willingness or ability to train for safe operation of equipment such as a bobcat, man lift, mower, plow truck, chainsaw, and forklift.
• Understanding of snow removal methods.

Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with Grade 12 plus additional training and coursework in irrigation systems. Applicants should have at least 2 years of proven experience in installing, repairing, and maintaining irrigation systems. Required credentials include Level 1 and Level 2 Certified Irrigation Technician courses, a Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate, and a Low Voltage Certificate. The role also requires physical ability to carry out all job duties and a valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s licence with Code 20 heavy trailer endorsement.
