Position Overview
The role of Fire Protection Specialist involves serving as the Assistant Chief for Health and Safety, responsible for developing and managing an extensive training program covering all functional areas within the base Fire Protection Office. This role includes coordinating and instructing fire department training, overseeing safety during live-fire training and major drills, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The position demands a thorough knowledge of firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials, and instructional techniques, as well as leadership in assigning and evaluating training programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist as Chief of Health and Safety, managing comprehensive training programs across all areas of fire protection operations.
- Coordinate and participate as instructor within the fire department's training office.
- Act as on-site Safety Officer during live-fire trainings and major exercises, with authority to halt operations to address hazards.
- Maintain expertise in firefighting, rescue operations, hazardous materials handling, and teaching methodologies.
- Delegate duties among staff responsible for delivering training programs.
- Assess the effectiveness of fire protection training, safety measures, and hazardous materials programs.
Employment Conditions and Requirements
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and suitability determinations.
- Use of employer-provided personal protective equipment is mandatory.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete Selective Service Registration certification.
- Proof of U.S. citizenship is required.
- Compliance with the Department of Defense Exceptional Family Member Program standards is required.
- Must fulfill requirements related to employment in foreign areas and employee return rights according to the DoD Civilian Personnel Management System rules.
- Direct deposit payment method is mandatory.
- Applicants ordinarily residing overseas under Status of Forces Agreement conditions are not eligible.
- Must be capable of lifting up to 100 pounds regularly during duties.
- Work schedule includes alternative duty shifts exceeding 12 hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays; shift rotation on a regular basis to cover these times.
- 72 firefighter hours per duty cycle are expected.
- Candidates need to obtain and maintain certifications within 24 months: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, and Fire Inspector II.
- Pre-employment physical examination to confirm physical fitness is required.
- Ability to obtain and retain a Secret security clearance is mandatory.
- Subject to pre-employment drug screening and ongoing random testing.
- Must consent to required vaccinations, including complete series and annual boosters, and maintain immunization status throughout employment.
- Designated as "Mission Essential"; must report to or remain at work in emergency or severe weather situations to support mission requirements.
Qualifications and Eligibility
Applicants must be U.S. citizens meeting specialized experience requirements. Specialized experience entails at least one year handling three or more of the following: assessing training needs; creating training plans and materials; managing budgets and contracts; or staying current with fire service laws and trends. Education cannot substitute for required experience.
