Financial Controller - Remote Contract Role

Role Overview

We are seeking a seasoned Financial Controller to oversee the company's accounting activities and financial reporting. This role focuses on managing the General Ledger, supervising bookkeeping, and spearheading the shift from outsourced accounting to an in-house finance team. Reporting directly to the CFO, this hands-on position involves improving financial processes and delivering precise, timely financial data.

Responsibilities

• Assume full responsibility for maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of the General Ledger and Chart of Accounts.
• Manage monthly closing procedures, reconciliations, and ensure financial precision.
• Lead the transition from an externally outsourced accounting setup to a fully integrated internal accounting team.
• Prepare monthly financial statements and comprehensive management reports, including Profit & Loss analyses across various business units.
• Ensure timely submission of financial reports to executive leadership.
• Oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions, reviewing invoices, payroll, expenses, and vendor payments.
• Guide and supervise the bookkeeping team to maintain high-quality financial operations.
• Monitor cash flow, perform bank reconciliations, and coordinate tax reporting activities including payroll, sales, and year-end taxes.
• Adhere strictly to company policies and financial controls while maintaining confidentiality with sensitive financial data.

Qualifications

• Proven track record as a Financial Controller or senior-level accountant with full General Ledger ownership.
• Extensive experience in managing month-end close and financial reporting cycles.
• Proficient use of QuickBooks software.
• Experience leading accounting or bookkeeping teams.
• Strong grasp of accounting principles and internal financial controls.
• Highest level of integrity and discretion in managing confidential financial information.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills with advanced English proficiency (C1/C2).
• Ability to work independently in a fully remote US business hours environment.
• Preferred experience includes leading accounting function migrations, familiarity with project accounting software such as BigTime, and background in professional services or design-related industries such as architecture or luxury interior design.
• CPA certification or equivalent is an advantage.

Additional Information

• This is a full-time, fully remote contractor role based in Portugal, working US business hours.
• Compensation ranges from $2,000 to $4,000 USD per month.
• The position starts immediately and includes a three-month contractor trial period, with potential for long-term engagement dependent on performance and company needs.
