Overview

Bookcraft Africa is seeking an Editorial Assistant to enhance its editorial and publishing processes. This position involves editing and proofreading manuscripts, managing editorial project workflows, maintaining project documentation, and delivering administrative support to ensure smooth progression of publishing tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and refine manuscripts and other publishing materials to uphold accuracy, clarity, consistency, and compliance with Bookcraft Africa’s editorial standards.
  • Evaluate manuscripts for grammar, punctuation, spelling, structure, readability, and consistency; prepare detailed editorial commentary and feedback for authors and editors.
  • Assist editors in preparing manuscripts for final production and publication stages.
  • Implement editorial corrections and changes as required.
  • Conduct fact-checking and fundamental research when necessary.
  • Keep precise records of manuscripts, author details, editorial phases, deadlines, and project statuses.
  • Regularly update editorial and project management tracking systems.
  • Follow up on pending editorial tasks, including approvals, revisions, and submissions.
  • Proofread book covers, promotional content, and other publishing-related materials.
  • Offer general administrative support to the editorial and operations teams as needed.

Candidate Profile

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in editing, publishing, content creation, or related fields.
  • Exceptional command of written English, with strong grammar, punctuation, and editing expertise.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Strong organizational and time management capabilities.
  • Capability to independently manage assigned projects and oversee multiple deadlines concurrently.
  • Flexibility in combining editorial responsibilities with administrative duties.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively within a small team.
  • Proactive in seeking necessary clarifications and asking questions to ensure accuracy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace platforms.
  • Eager to learn new tools, systems, and publishing workflows.
  • Possesses pride in delivering precise, high-quality output and respects confidentiality of authors and projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience within a publishing environment.
  • Knowledge of book publishing workflows and stages.
  • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign or other design and publishing software.
  • Experience collaborating with authors or creative professionals.
  • Strong passion for books, publishing, literature, culture, or African writing.

Working Arrangement and Location

This is a hybrid role based in Ibadan, Nigeria. Candidates must reside in Ibadan and be available to work onsite at the office three days each week.
